Project Summary:
Gustav was a rail-mounted launch system developed to address the challenge of finding suitable ground takeoff locations for Project ROSE. The system used elastic bands to accelerate an RC aircraft to its minimum takeoff velocity within a short distance. Designed with simplicity and functionality in mind, Gustav allowed for reliable aircraft launches in various environments, making it a versatile solution for remote operations.

Design
Reinforced Design: Gustav was constructed with structural integrity in mind, using a reinforced framework to withstand the high forces experienced during launch.
Resin-Printed Pulleys: The pulleys, which guide the elastic bands, were resin-printed for precision and durability, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.
V-Slot Rails: The rail system utilized V-slot rails to provide a stable and smooth pathway for the rail carriage during launch.
Simple Carriage Design: The rail carriage was assembled using a block of wood and rail mounts, offering a straightforward yet effective platform for the aircraft.
Launch Speed: Gustav was capable of accelerating the aircraft to speeds between 10 and 15 meters per second, depending on the elastic band configuration.
Safety Enhancements: Plans included the integration of a small winch or motor to automate the loading and release process, enhancing safety by reducing manual intervention.
Gustav Project Summary
Project Gustav was developed as part of Project ROSE to address the challenges of ground takeoffs in limited environments. Traditional takeoffs often required more space than was available, so we needed a system that could accelerate the aircraft to its minimum takeoff velocity in much less distance.
Gustav uses a set of two to four elastic bands that are secured at the back and loop around a pulley at the front. When the cart holding the aircraft is pulled back and released, the elastic bands propel the cart forward, efficiently accelerating the aircraft along the track to reach the necessary takeoff speed. This setup ensures that the aircraft achieves the required velocity over a much shorter distance than a traditional ground takeoff would.
Designed with portability and ease of use in mind, Gustav can be disassembled into two pieces for easy transport. The legs are also easily removable, allowing for quick setup and teardown. Additionally, the second half of the system, near the handle at the rear, includes a door for storing extra rollers or rail system components, providing backup options in case something breaks during use
